Achieving Success by Following Your Passion

Posted by Joshua on July 21, 2011 in Earn All You Can, Give All You Can, Videos with View Comments

Don’t you think it’s about time you followed your passion?

In this video, Joshua Bevan learns how important it is to achieve success by following your passion. Using your special talents to help the world is not only vital to your own happiness, but it is also the key to living a life of true love and meaning. We all know that finding and following your passion can be challenging, but, as Joshua finds out, you have been given a gift to give to the world. Once you truly believe that following your passion can lead to success, the proper path will become easy.

We’ve heard it before: You’ve been given a gift. You have special gifts.

But the thing that they don’t say is that the gift is not for you. The gift is for you to give to the world. Let me put it like this: When I was eight years old, I went to Jill Flores’ birthday party. The party was a regular 8 year old’s party… balloons, cake, games.

One of the cool things that I remember is that Jill’s family had a big property and they collected a lot of big crazy stuff from movie sets and theme parks… It was all basically junk, but it was really fun to play around.

Achieving Success by Following Your PassionNow, when you go to a party, what do you bring? A present, right? Well, at the time, I was not an eight year old girl. I didn’t have any frame of reference to pick out a present. Nor did I have any money to buy one if I did. So my mom bought the present. I think it was a my little pony. Then my mom wrapped up the birthday gift, gave it to me, and drove me to the party. When we got there, I gave Jill her gift, and I had a great time at the party.

That’s the way it works when you’re eight, and that’s the way it works for the rest of your life.

You have been given a gift. It’s been wrapped up nice and pretty. But the gift is not for you. The gift is meant for you to give to the world.

Once you start giving your gift to the world, you are going to have a great time at the party.

Now, when I was 8, my mom went out and got a my little pony, wrapped it up and handed it to me. What would happen if I never gave that gift to whom it was intended for? What if I just stayed home, and let the pretty wrapped package gather dust on the shelf? Two things would happen:
Finding and following your passion is the key to true success

  • Jill would have lost out on that my little pony. Not a huge bummer if she misses one toy horse. But, what if a lot of the other kids stayed home also? What if the only kid that came gave Jill a my little pony sparkling stable, but she had no ponies to put in it? The same thing is happening in the world right now. Too many people are wasting their time in jobs that they hate while their gifts sit on a shelf gathering dust. That doesn’t just affect you. That affects all of us.
  • The second thing that would have happened if little eight year old Joshua was to scared to take his gift over to Jill Flores’ house, is that I wouldn’t have had any fun at the party. I wouldn’t have gotten any cake and ice cream. I wouldn’t have been able to play any games. I wouldn’t have been able to ride that giant spinning barrel that I’m pretty sure used to be at Magic Mountain.

When you give your gifts to the world, you have a good time. That’s the best part about your special gifts. Not only are you good at giving them, you have fun doing it! So do it. I understand that we all have to tread water a little bit. But there is plenty of time in everyday. Message me and I will help you look at your schedule and find some time to give your gift to the world.

I used to think that you had to work hard at success in order to be able to enjoy your passions. But it’s the opposite: you must work hard at your passions in order to enjoy success!

Let me know what your passions are. Tell me about your gifts. And tell me how I can help.

Confidence vs Arrogance

Posted by Joshua on June 8, 2011 in Earn All You Can, Videos with View Comments

In this episode, Joshua learns that there is no such thing as too much confidence. Arrogant people are put in the same category as selfish or rude people. True leadership comes from being sure of where your going and letting others know about it.

Too Much Confidence

Today, I’m going to share with you a quick lesson I learned about confidence. Are you ready?

There is no such thing as too much confidence.

Did you get that? You want it slower this time? There is NO such thing as too much confidence.

We all know that your success has a lot to do with your level of self-assuredness, self-confidence.

The more positive and definite you sound like with your decisions, the more likely other people are going to follow your leadership. You want to attract more people to your line of thinking, no matter what industry you are in. Bigger leader = more followers = more success!

Confidence is attractive.

And the higher your confidence, the more attractive you become to others. Simple, right?

There is no such thing as too much confidenceBut Joshua, too much confidence comes across as cocky and arrogant!

No. There’s no threshold. There’s no line you cross that makes you all of a sudden become cocky.

Cockiness and arrogance come on a different scale. They come from a lack of consideration for others. They are on the same scale as rudeness and selfishness. Cockiness and arrogance come out when your actions and decisions only benefit you don’t reflect consideration for the other person’s thoughts or feelings.

As long as you’re a genuine, authentic human being who thinks about the world around you when you make decisions, you have no danger of EVER being too confident in those decisions or in yourself.

What do you do to boost your self-confidence? How do you work on being sure of your decisions? Share with us in the comments below.

Success secrets from John Wesley quotes

Posted by Joshua on June 1, 2011 in Earn All You Can, Give All You Can, Save All You Can with View Comments

While I don’t find myself in a church on a regular basis, I do see great value in learning from religious leaders. John Wesley’s writings are no exception. Wesley lived during Revolutionary War times in both England and America. He founded a very analytical and studious movement in Christianity called Methodism.

John Wesley was a great leader in both religious and in secular success. The Methodist approach to religion reminds me of many of today’s agnostics. The basic, watered down premise is to accept no dogma blindly, but instead for each person to study and interpret all writings for himself.

John Wesley Quotes

The danger in such a thoughtful approach to faith is similar to a flaw I have noticed in myself and many of my clients. Many of today’s entrepreneurs experience “paralysis by analysis.”

“Beware you be not swallowed up in books! An ounce of love is worth a pound of knowledge.” –John Wesley, 1768

John Wesley writes that while knowledge is important, it’s the love that really makes a difference in the world. Beware of sitting back and spending your whole life making “perfect decisions” and failing to take action. There is no such thing as a perfect plan. Get out into the world now and spread your love.

On the other hand, John Wesley wrote not to run your life with your head down:

“Though I am always in haste, I am never in a hurry.” –John Wesley, 1777

True leaders develop the ability to make informed, efficient judgments quickly. This is one of the keys to success. Surround yourself with wise advisers, trust their opinions, but never hurry through any decisions to the point that you forget to think for yourself.

John Wesley measured success differently than many others of his time (and many people of today as well). Wesley felt that success is measured not by the number of possessions that one can amass, but by the amount of positive that that he can implement.

“Having first, gained all you can, and secondly, saved all you can, then give all you can.” –John Wesley, Sermon 50

Joshua Bevan learns how to earn all you can save all you can give all you canThis is commonly paraphrased “Earn all you can. Save all you can. Give all you can.” In order to be a good steward of the resources we have been given, we must do our best to produce more than we consume. Then, with the bounty that we have leftover, we must help others. We must strive to turn our world to paradise on earth.

If the teachings of John Wesley resonate with you, then you have a lot in common with Joshua Bevan.

Act at the Speed of Instruction

Posted by Joshua on February 3, 2011 in Earn All You Can, Videos with View Comments

In this episode, Joshua Bevan learns from a successful Real Estate investor that the best way to be successful is to act at the speed of instruction. If you want to Earn all you can and save all you can so you can give all you can, you must open the shrink wrap of those seminar education systems and start applying what you learn.

Take Action Now!

A few days ago Ryan brought up a great point about the value of education. It sparked an awesome discussion about those of us who go to a seminar and buy an educational product and then take it home and do nothing with it.

We are shelling out big bucks at the seminar and it just sits there in the – I love the term that someone said – the “shelf help” section of our book case.

So some people say that knowledge is power. But I like to think of it as only

Applied Knowledge is Power.

Let me tell you about a friend of mine. My friend J has a motto. Almost a mantra. J says, “Act at the speed of instruction.”
And J doesn’t just say it, he lives it.
I admire J very much. He is not only a great business man and real estate investor. But I also admire him as a kind, giving family man.

Now, I tagged J in this video, but I know he’s not going to respond right now because, at this very moment, he is accomplishing another page in his dream book.
Congratulations! Way to go, buddy!

The best way to be successful in any field is to immediately apply what you learnNow a few years ago, J was in a tough spot, to put it mildly. To respect his privacy, I’m not going to get into the details, but let me just say that major health issues led to major financial issues. To the point that J was selling his personal positions on ebay just to put food on the table for his family.
Now J worked his butt off just to try to find the investment for a Real Estate Investor Education program.

By the way, this system that J uses is, in my opinion, THE Real Estate education that everyone needs. If you want the info, private message me and I’ll get it to you.

So the key that J implements that I personally am learning from him is: every time he learns something, he applies it immediately.
When he is told that a successful investor has many Real Estate agent contacts, he is on the phone calling up agents. When an instructor teaches him how to analyze a property for a short sale, he has a hundred spreadsheets filled out by the end of the day.
Now really awesome thing is, it works. In fact, it has worked so well for J. that in a few short years, he has grown his business, net worth, passive income, and accomplished so many pages in his dream book that he is going to need another book to start dreaming even bigger.

So that’s the key. That’s what I learn from J. Act at the speed of instruction.
Making an investment in yourself, an investment in your future is awesome. But for heaven’s sake, take it out of the shrink wrap. This is not a comic book action figure that keeps its value if it’s never opened.

That’s the big deal. So I know that you’ve figured out who you want to be and what you need to learn. So find someone who can help you gain that knowledge…

APPLY it. Start doing it.

Tell us all what you are looking to learn in the comments below, and, as a group, we can help you connect with the right person. I’ll see you later. Have more fun.

Why are we so afraid to be embarrassed?

Posted by Joshua on January 22, 2011 in Earn All You Can, Videos with View Comments

In this episode Joshua Bevan learns from a group of evolutionary psychologists why fear and stress is a reflex when we are presented with an embarrassing situation.

If you liked that video, check out another video where I learn to face my irrational fears.

Why does embarrassment cause stress?

Hey, Joshua Bevan here, learning how to earn all I can, save all I can, so I can give all I can.

Fear.

I read an article written by a group of evolutionary psychologists that really helped me put some of my fears into perspective.
We all know about the Fight or Flight response, right? It was developed over time to help me when I’m in physical danger. When the lion starts charging me, I’ve got to gear my body up to protect myself.
What is your most embarrassing moment?I’ve got to choose between pulling out my spear and killing the lion, or running as fast as I can and hoping to get away.

That makes sense…but here’s the really interesting part:
In the world I live in, I’m not presented with physical threats very often. My life is rarely in that kind of danger. Yet my body still gears up. I get that stress response.
My heart starts racing, pupils dilate, heavy breathing, digestion shuts down.
But all of this happens when I’m “just” about to talk to a new person or stand on stage in front of many people. There’s no physical danger here. The worst thing that can happen is that I can embarrass myself.

Embarrassment? So what? What does my tribal hunter/gathering ancestor care about embarrassment?

Ah-ha! But he does! You see back, then my survival is all based within the tribe. If I did something that was socially unacceptable, the rest of the tribe would punish me.

Watch. Say I was foolish enough to put on my best loincloth and seduce the chief’s woman. We sneak off and make passionate love on the bear skin rug.
Now when the chief walks into the wig-wam, he’s going to be pissed. He and all of his homeboys are going to beat me up and leave me in the jungle- all alone.
Genetically afraid of embarrassmentI’m all alone in the jungle. I’m not going to survive. My genes aren’t going to be passed on…

Now let’s take it a step further. What if the whole tribe is trying to figure out where to find the best hunting area.
I stand up in front of everyone and tell them my idea. But they all think my speech was lame and my idea sucks. They all laugh, and I’m embarrassed.

If I present embarrassing ideas over and over again, the tribe won’t accept me anymore. They will leave me alone to die.

To our ancestors, embarrassment equals death.

But do us, it doesn’t. That’s what we have to remember. In the embarrassing moment, I know it feels like you’re facing death.
But when it’s over, we can all look bath and laugh. Tell me about your most embarrassing moment, one where you thought you were facing death. Leave a comment below or post a message on Facebook.
I’ll see you later, have more fun!

Stop Settling for Average

Posted by Joshua on December 3, 2010 in Earn All You Can, Videos with View Comments

Joshua Bevan shows how society is failing our youth. True talent is squandered in the quest for mediocrity.
The message: Stop Being Average! Work on improving the areas in which you excel. Others will help you in your weak areas.

transcript
Hi there, this is Joshua Bevan learning how to earn all I can save all I can so I can give all I can. Something came up yesterday with a HUGE life lesson in it, and I had to get out the camera and tell you the story today.

One of the parts that I love about owning my own business is that I write my own schedule and can make the time to give back to the world in the way I want. One thing I really enjoy is volunteering as a director at a summer camp. I started as a counselor and loved it so much that I now train young adults how to be awesome counselors as well; how to truly make a positive impact on the lives of the campers. So last night while we were at a fundraising event…

If you have a few dollars extra to make a tax deductible donation that would go a loooong way to improving the lives of local youth, send me a personal message or email and I’ll put you in touch with the right people. Thank you!

…So last night, we were at a fundraising event, and I was chatting with one of my best counselors. I’m not going to use her real name on here because I don’t want to embarrass her, but we’ll call her Nicole.

Nicole is a junior in high school. She is a wonderful writer. I’ve been lucky enough to read some of her short stories, and it blows me away, how good they are!

Society tries to trap us in the box by forcing us to improve our weaknesses. Now, Nicole also happens to be a good student. She works hard to earn good grades in all of her classes. This particular night, she was stressed out over an upcoming history test. She was having trouble memorizing all of the names and dates.

This got me thinking. Here’s a girl who has a great creative writing talent – and writing is something she LOVES. With the proper encouragement, I have no doubt that she will become one of the great writers of our time.

But our society is failing her.

Instead of nurturing and developing the talents that each individual excels with, our system is designed to encourage each individual to focus on being average, across the board.

I’m going to tell you what I told Nicole last night:

Stop being average!

You are allowed to be great!

I’m giving you permission right now to stop focusing on improving your weaknesses. If you’re particularly good at memorizing facts, that’s ok. If not, that’s ok too, because there are other people whose strengths lie in your areas of weakness. You will find them, and help each other succeed.

But for now, the best thing you can do is focus on your strengths. What are you good at? What do you LOVE to do?

And just like you now have permission to have weaknesses, I now also give you permission to love your strengths.

Put most of your focus into working on those strengths. Love doing it! Know that there is always room for improvement. You can always learn something from each new person that you meet.

That is how you become GREAT!

How are you working on becoming great? What are your talents? What do you love?

Tell me and the rest of the community about it. Leave a comment below and we’ll help each other succeed.

How to Save Money by Grilling a Turkey

Posted by Joshua on November 24, 2010 in Save All You Can, Videos with View Comments

Your family’s food bill is a great place to “Save all you can.” In this video, Joshua Bevan shows how easy it is to grill a turkey that was on sale for the Thanksgiving holiday. It is so easy, anyone can do it, any time of year!

Transcript
Hey, Joshua Bevan here learning how to earn all I can, save all I can so I can give all I can. It’s not too often that I get to do a save all you can video, but I just love this time of year. Uh, right now, we’re mid-November, and because of the holidays that are coming up, you can get a great deal uh on a turkey, a whole turkey.

5 bucks for this 16 lb Turkey. Great Deal.

So I’m super excited about all the fun that we’re gonna have actually preparing this bird, it’s going to be delicious food, but the best part is, all that money that we’re saving on all those meals, we’re going to actually be able to put to good use, to better the world around us, and that’s the best part about of it of all.

If you want some more videos on exactly what I’m doing to prepare, uh, I’m going to put some links up on joshuabevan.com/grilledturkey.

So I’m going to go ahead and chop this up. I’m gonna chop this turkey up into pieces and that’s going to be perfect for grilling. You know, the inside of the box thinking is that we have to roast this turkey, and we have to roast it whole, and augh, that’s just such a pain. But oh my gosh, if you prepare a turkey right, it can be delicious for leftovers, for sandwiches, all kinds of good meat, you know, this 16 lb bird is going to feed my family for days and days, so it’s gonna be a great thing and I’m super excited.Joshua Bevan grills turkey

There ya go, basically now we have all our turkey in pieces. These pieces are gonna be perfect for grilling and what we, what we have left is this carcass here, that still has good meat on it so what I’m gonna do, is I’m gonna put it in a little stock pot right over here, with all of the uh you know, special prizes that, that came inside the bird. Put water in there, put some vegetables, and boil that, and, and then eventually I’m gonna strain it and pick the meat off. That’s gonna be good soup, with the vegetables, maybe we’ll put some either rice or pasta in there with it, maybe potatoes, but that’s gonna be a really good soup, and it’s basically free! That is with whatever’s leftover from this meal, so that’s gonna save a lot. That’s a whole meal basically free.

Awesome. Now on to the brine.

Now brine is basically sugar and salt in a water solution. Some people like to put extra spices in there, but me personally I think it’s a waste because I like to put all the spices on later in a rub, and I’ll show you that later on.
So basically what I put in my brine is kosher salt, and honey, and I’ve made some hot water right here, and we’re just gonna pour them in and stir them in and make sure that they dissolve very well.

Turkey Brine Recipe

1 Gallon Water
2 cups Kosher Salt
1 1/3 cups Honey

Great, so that’s dissolving in there perfectly. If you want all the exact measurements go to joshuabevan.com/grilledturkey.

So what we’re gonna do is we’re gonna take that brine and we’re gonna pour it just into a regular cooler, this is a regular picnic cooler, and we’re gonna pour it right in there (pouring noise…..), get it all in there perfectly. Now it’s still quite hot but what we’re gonna do is we’re gonna cool it down with some ice. I got some ice cubes right here, we’re just gonna pour that right in there (ice cube noise….). Now we’re gonna let that sit and make sure it cools before we put our turkey pieces in there. We don’t want it to be hot at all because if it’s hot then it’s gonna cook our turkey and that’s a bad thing.

So what we’re gonna do is we’re gonna take all of our pieces and just put them right in there, right in the brine.

Now I’m gonna leave this 4 to 8 hours in this cooler, and the cooler is gonna keep it nice and, nice and cold so I can just leave it out in the garage or in a good corner of the kitchen where nobody’s gonna bother it. I’m gonna go about 12 hours on this one though because of the timing that I want to serve for lunch tomorrow. But for the, through the magic of video editing, I’ll see you in a couple of seconds!

Now comes the fun part. I get to grill today.

So I let my turkey soak overnight in the brine. Oh man, that looks delicious. So what I’m going to do is take these pieces out of here. Let them dry off. Let them get up to room temperature. I’m gonna put a dry rub of super-secret herbs and spices on there. No. I’m kidding. Go to JoshuaBevan.com/GrilledTurkey. I’ll put the whole recipe for my special dry rub on there. It’s delicious.

Poultry Dry Rub Recipe

3 Tablespoon Cumin
3 Tablespoon Garlic Powder
1 Tablespoon Black Pepper
1 Tablespoon Cayenne Pepper
1 Tablespoon Oregano

After the dry rub, we throw them on the grill. And then, when we take them off, let them sit on the counter for a little bit. And then comes carving time.

turkey on grillSo after I let the turkey rest so that all the moisture and flavors get locked in, I’ll carve the breasts and thighs into nice thick slices. And then after that I’m gonna put some of that delicious meat onto sourdough bread, with some lettuce, and tomatoes, and pickles, and give it a good spread of my famous white barbeque sauce (I’ll put the recipe for that up on joshuabevan.com also)

White BBQ Sauce Recipe

2 cups Mayonaise
1 cup Apple Cider Vinegar
1 Tablespoon Horse Radish
1 Tablespoon Black Pepper
1 Tablespoon Yellow Mustard
1 Tablespoon Garlic Salt
1 Tablespoon Honey

Now, this is a tasty sandwich! I hope that this video gives YOU the courage to try something new for your family. Make sure to share those experiences below, um, in the comments section, and especially if you want to invite me over for dinner, just write your address underneath. So, remember that the kitchen and, in this case, the backyard grill, is a great place to save all you can! I’m going to keep enjoying this delicious meal, I’ll see you later, have more fun! MMMMM……

Top 8 Ways to Compliment Someone You Don’t Like

Posted by Joshua on November 23, 2010 in Earn All You Can with View Comments

One of the keys to success is keeping a positive attitude. With a positive attitude, we will encounter more opportunities for growth. This is because 1) we will be more open and see more of the paths in front of us, and 2) we actually attract more positive opportunities to ourselves.

Compliment your Enemy

Paying someone a compliment may turn an enemy into a friend

The hard part is keeping that positive outlook the majority of the time. Even when things look grim. Even when interacting with negative people. We all must interact with people who we don’t like, sometimes even on a daily basis. It can be quite challenging to avoid slipping into a negative view point after or even during one of those encounters.

If You Don’t Have Anything Nice to Say, Think of Something.

I find that the best way to defuse one of those meetings and keep it moving in a productive direction is to deliver a genuine compliment, especially at the beginning of the conversation. If you start off on a positive note, there is a much higher chance that it will stay positive.

Finding a genuine compliment, especially about someone who you already know you don’t like, can be very difficult. The compliment needs to be true and heartfelt. Whatever you do, DO NOT LIE. The other person will see right through the lie and you will be worse off than when you started.

How to Fake a Compliment Find an Honest Compliment

  1. Reframe a Negative. Instead of focusing on how anal retentive your boss is when he scrutinizes your every move, try reframing. Tell him, “It’s very thorough of you to always pick up on tiny details.”
  2. Focus on an Accessory. Even people with horrible taste are bound to pick up something nice. Try, “I really like your tie,” or, “Those are beautiful earrings you’re wearing.”
  3. Notice Changes. Sometimes general observations, with the proper vocal inflections, can be taken as compliments. While smiling, you can remark, “You got a haircut!”
  4. Thank You for Participating

  5. The Clothes Make the Man. Even though a fashion designer dreamed up that outfit and a clothing manufacturer did all of the sewing, your “friend” still put in the work of choosing and purchasing it. That should count for something, right?
  6. The Power of Suggestion. Beginning a conversation with, “You sound like you’re in a cheerful mood this morning! Did you have a good weekend?” may help to change the tone from neutral to good. Time this one properly, though, because it may also backfire and change the tone from bad to worse.
  7. Be Generic. “I admire your effort!” If you have trouble finding a quality compliment about your “friend” that you like, try complimenting him about a quality you typically like in ALL people.
  8. Think Like a Little League Coach. In youth sports, everyone gets a trophy simply for participating. “Thank you for coming to the meeting,” or “I appreciate that you were my partner on this project.”
  9. Above All Else – Be Sincere. Whatever you do, whether it is one of the above suggestions or another way you find to creatively compliment someone, make sure that the compliment is an honest one.

As long as you are genuine and authentic with what you are saying, the other person will be able to read it. Even the most negative people are boosted up by true and honest compliments. Use this knowledge to help propel yourself forward in your success.

If you plan to use any of these tips, tell us how in the comment section below.

Unconditional Positivity

Posted by Joshua on November 18, 2010 in Earn All You Can with View Comments

Everyone in this society has the same opportunity for success. Successful people win more because they seize more of these opportunities. When you keep a positive focus, more of these opportunities are apparent to you. When you see more, you can seize more.

How do I stay focused on the opportunities in front of me?

Learn to attract more positive people to your life.I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: Broke people hang out with broke people. Successful people hang out with POSITIVE people. That’s one of the biggest keys, hands down.

How do I attract more positive people in my life?

Be a positive person! Like attracts like, so the more positive your attitude is, the easier it will be for you to connect with other positive people. Your attitude comes out in the way that you present yourself. People can tell when you’re faking a smile.

Life is hard. How do I make my whole body smile?

You know all about unconditional love: when you love someone no matter what. You can be really mad at her for something but you still love her. The same idea surrounds unconditional positivity. No matter what is happening around you, work on maintaining that positive focus. It’s not easy, especially when nothing seems to be going your way, but your attitude will help you climb out of that rut.A positive attitude will help you climb out of any rut.

  • Count your blessings. Think of all the things that are great in your life. Start with the fact that you are alive.
  • Help someone else. Nothing else can uplift your spirits more than bringing joy to someone else. Find a way to volunteer your time to something that you are passionate about.
  • Do an activity that you love. If it’s possible, stop whatever you are doing and take time to go surfing, or play guitar, or read a book. Whatever makes you smile, go do it.
  • Talk to a mentor. It’s important to connect with mentors that have traveled the paths that you are on. Chances are, they have experienced the same speed bumps that you are hitting. They will have a good perspective of the other side to share with you.
  • Reaffirm your goals. Take out your dream book or goal board or fantasy wall and bask in where you are headed. Know that you dreamed it up, so you have the power to make it happen. Before you put your book away, take action on the next step (even if it’s a baby step!) toward making one of those goals happen.

I hope to be one of the positive people with which you surround yourself. Tell me how I can help you achieve your dreams. Leave a comment in the box below.
