Success secrets from John Wesley quotes

Posted by Joshua on June 1, 2011 in Earn All You Can, Give All You Can, Save All You Can with View Comments

While I don’t find myself in a church on a regular basis, I do see great value in learning from religious leaders. John Wesley’s writings are no exception. Wesley lived during Revolutionary War times in both England and America. He founded a very analytical and studious movement in Christianity called Methodism.

John Wesley was a great leader in both religious and in secular success. The Methodist approach to religion reminds me of many of today’s agnostics. The basic, watered down premise is to accept no dogma blindly, but instead for each person to study and interpret all writings for himself.

John Wesley Quotes

The danger in such a thoughtful approach to faith is similar to a flaw I have noticed in myself and many of my clients. Many of today’s entrepreneurs experience “paralysis by analysis.”

“Beware you be not swallowed up in books! An ounce of love is worth a pound of knowledge.” –John Wesley, 1768

John Wesley writes that while knowledge is important, it’s the love that really makes a difference in the world. Beware of sitting back and spending your whole life making “perfect decisions” and failing to take action. There is no such thing as a perfect plan. Get out into the world now and spread your love.

On the other hand, John Wesley wrote not to run your life with your head down:

“Though I am always in haste, I am never in a hurry.” –John Wesley, 1777

True leaders develop the ability to make informed, efficient judgments quickly. This is one of the keys to success. Surround yourself with wise advisers, trust their opinions, but never hurry through any decisions to the point that you forget to think for yourself.

John Wesley measured success differently than many others of his time (and many people of today as well). Wesley felt that success is measured not by the number of possessions that one can amass, but by the amount of positive that that he can implement.

“Having first, gained all you can, and secondly, saved all you can, then give all you can.” –John Wesley, Sermon 50

Joshua Bevan learns how to earn all you can save all you can give all you canThis is commonly paraphrased “Earn all you can. Save all you can. Give all you can.” In order to be a good steward of the resources we have been given, we must do our best to produce more than we consume. Then, with the bounty that we have leftover, we must help others. We must strive to turn our world to paradise on earth.

If the teachings of John Wesley resonate with you, then you have a lot in common with Joshua Bevan.

Hey, Joshua Bevan here learning how to earn all I can, save all I can so I can give all I can. It’s not too often that I get to do a save all you can video, but I just love this time of year. Uh, right now, we’re mid-November, and because of the holidays that are coming up, you can get a great deal uh on a turkey, a whole turkey.

5 bucks for this 16 lb Turkey. Great Deal.

So I’m super excited about all the fun that we’re gonna have actually preparing this bird, it’s going to be delicious food, but the best part is, all that money that we’re saving on all those meals, we’re going to actually be able to put to good use, to better the world around us, and that’s the best part about of it of all.

If you want some more videos on exactly what I’m doing to prepare, uh, I’m going to put some links up on joshuabevan.com/grilledturkey.

So I’m going to go ahead and chop this up. I’m gonna chop this turkey up into pieces and that’s going to be perfect for grilling. You know, the inside of the box thinking is that we have to roast this turkey, and we have to roast it whole, and augh, that’s just such a pain. But oh my gosh, if you prepare a turkey right, it can be delicious for leftovers, for sandwiches, all kinds of good meat, you know, this 16 lb bird is going to feed my family for days and days, so it’s gonna be a great thing and I’m super excited.Joshua Bevan grills turkey

There ya go, basically now we have all our turkey in pieces. These pieces are gonna be perfect for grilling and what we, what we have left is this carcass here, that still has good meat on it so what I’m gonna do, is I’m gonna put it in a little stock pot right over here, with all of the uh you know, special prizes that, that came inside the bird. Put water in there, put some vegetables, and boil that, and, and then eventually I’m gonna strain it and pick the meat off. That’s gonna be good soup, with the vegetables, maybe we’ll put some either rice or pasta in there with it, maybe potatoes, but that’s gonna be a really good soup, and it’s basically free! That is with whatever’s leftover from this meal, so that’s gonna save a lot. That’s a whole meal basically free.

Awesome. Now on to the brine.

Now brine is basically sugar and salt in a water solution. Some people like to put extra spices in there, but me personally I think it’s a waste because I like to put all the spices on later in a rub, and I’ll show you that later on.
So basically what I put in my brine is kosher salt, and honey, and I’ve made some hot water right here, and we’re just gonna pour them in and stir them in and make sure that they dissolve very well.

Turkey Brine Recipe

1 Gallon Water
2 cups Kosher Salt
1 1/3 cups Honey

Great, so that’s dissolving in there perfectly. If you want all the exact measurements go to joshuabevan.com/grilledturkey.

So what we’re gonna do is we’re gonna take that brine and we’re gonna pour it just into a regular cooler, this is a regular picnic cooler, and we’re gonna pour it right in there (pouring noise…..), get it all in there perfectly. Now it’s still quite hot but what we’re gonna do is we’re gonna cool it down with some ice. I got some ice cubes right here, we’re just gonna pour that right in there (ice cube noise….). Now we’re gonna let that sit and make sure it cools before we put our turkey pieces in there. We don’t want it to be hot at all because if it’s hot then it’s gonna cook our turkey and that’s a bad thing.

So what we’re gonna do is we’re gonna take all of our pieces and just put them right in there, right in the brine.

Now I’m gonna leave this 4 to 8 hours in this cooler, and the cooler is gonna keep it nice and, nice and cold so I can just leave it out in the garage or in a good corner of the kitchen where nobody’s gonna bother it. I’m gonna go about 12 hours on this one though because of the timing that I want to serve for lunch tomorrow. But for the, through the magic of video editing, I’ll see you in a couple of seconds!

Now comes the fun part. I get to grill today.

So I let my turkey soak overnight in the brine. Oh man, that looks delicious. So what I’m going to do is take these pieces out of here. Let them dry off. Let them get up to room temperature. I’m gonna put a dry rub of super-secret herbs and spices on there. No. I’m kidding. Go to JoshuaBevan.com/GrilledTurkey. I’ll put the whole recipe for my special dry rub on there. It’s delicious.

Poultry Dry Rub Recipe

3 Tablespoon Cumin
3 Tablespoon Garlic Powder
1 Tablespoon Black Pepper
1 Tablespoon Cayenne Pepper
1 Tablespoon Oregano

After the dry rub, we throw them on the grill. And then, when we take them off, let them sit on the counter for a little bit. And then comes carving time.

turkey on grillSo after I let the turkey rest so that all the moisture and flavors get locked in, I’ll carve the breasts and thighs into nice thick slices. And then after that I’m gonna put some of that delicious meat onto sourdough bread, with some lettuce, and tomatoes, and pickles, and give it a good spread of my famous white barbeque sauce (I’ll put the recipe for that up on joshuabevan.com also)

White BBQ Sauce Recipe

2 cups Mayonaise
1 cup Apple Cider Vinegar
1 Tablespoon Horse Radish
1 Tablespoon Black Pepper
1 Tablespoon Yellow Mustard
1 Tablespoon Garlic Salt
1 Tablespoon Honey

Now, this is a tasty sandwich! I hope that this video gives YOU the courage to try something new for your family. Make sure to share those experiences below, um, in the comments section, and especially if you want to invite me over for dinner, just write your address underneath. So, remember that the kitchen and, in this case, the backyard grill, is a great place to save all you can! I’m going to keep enjoying this delicious meal, I’ll see you later, have more fun! MMMMM……

How to Save on all Your Online Shopping

Posted by Joshua on October 19, 2010 in Give All You Can, Save All You Can with View Comments

Save Money OnlineSaving money online is becoming more of a necessity for all of us. According to the US Census Bearau, we spend $126 Trillion online every year. This number grows higher as more Americans begin to take advantage of the money saving deals given by online retailers. Here’s a way to save even more on all of the already low prices on the ‘net. ShopBest pays you cash back on your online shopping. Here’s how:

  1. Visit ShopBest and download your FREE toolbar.
  2. Shop as you normally would. (That’s it!!)
  3. The ShopBest toolbar will automatically give you cashback points at the stores your normally visit.

ShopBest is the online coupon that is always on. There are no special logins to keep track of or cumbersome websites to visit before shopping. As Ron Popeil would say, “Set it and forget it!” Easy, simple, and it will save you money from your family’s budget.

Give All You Can

Help children in needThe part that caught my eye originally is the ShopBest Cares program. Every time that ny of its members make a purchase, ShopBest will make a donation to a charity that benefits children. You don’t need to change anything about your shopping habits, yet you will get a check in the mail, and so will the organizations that help kids in need.

Household Budgeting: How to Minimize your Shopping Expenses

Posted by Dawn on August 20, 2010 in Save All You Can with View Comments

One of the easiest things you can implement when learning how to budget for a family is to make a shopping list and STICK TO IT!  It’s as simple as that!  In addition to Reducing, Reusing, and Recycling to fix your finances, this is a very simple tip that you can follow.

How to Make a Shopping List

The first step is to make a reasonable shopping list.  (If you need some help getting started, check out this sample grocery list.) If you aren’t already in the habit, start a list on the fridge or another family-friendly place for all family members to write down things that are nearly finished. You should have separate lists for groceries and other household items that can be purchased somewhere other than the grocery store (usually at a cheaper price!).  Then, on the day before shopping day, organize your list (or lists) in an order that makes sense to you: by section of the store, by type of item, or by most-to-least important in case your trip gets cut short.

Choose a Shopping Day

Household Budgeting Made Easier by Sticking to a List

Household Budgeting Made Easier by Sticking to a List

Doing your shopping once a week (or twice if necessary for a large family) is the next step in household budgeting.  By only going shopping on designated days you can stick to your budget and your list because you will not be picking up “just one more thing” every time you are out at the store.  Instead, you will be planning all week for what you actually need, and if it’s written down you know it is a smart purchase.

Once you start putting these tips into action, you will save time and energy as well as money.  Making your list throughout the week will reduce the time you spend on shopping day, and spending only one day on shopping will free up the time you spend driving, parking, paying, and unloading the car.  It’s a win-win situation for your time and your budget!

Saving Money is like Saving Planet Earth: How Reducing, Reusing, and Recycling can Fix your Finances

Posted by Dawn on August 13, 2010 in Save All You Can with View Comments

There are plenty of money-saving tips to be found these days. Everywhere you look, people are encouraging each other to cut back on grocery bills, phone bills, and kids’ extra-curricular activities in an effort to survive the down economy. However, it does not take expensive How-To Books or seminars to learn how to live frugally. You and your family can come out ahead if you incorporate a simple mantra into your lives: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.

Reduce

As is the case when considering our landfills and limited resources on Earth, the first way to make a big difference in your finances is by Reducing. In other words, determine what is important to you and cut out the rest! Do you need subscriptions to eight different magazines that you never read, or do you have one favorite? Do you savor the experience of dining out alone to the same extent as you enjoy dining out with friends and family? Notice there is not necessarily a need to cut out ALL luxuries in order to help your finances; once you determine which luxuries are completely unnecessary to you, you can cut expenses without even noticing a change in your lifestyle.

Reuse

You can help yourself and the planet when you learn to Reuse. If you determine that you need a new “thing” for your household (furniture, dishes, toys, books, and so on), look for a place other than a retail store from which to obtain it. Websites like Craigslist and Freecycle are good places to start looking for non-consumable items that you can get for free or cheap prices, and are places that you can sell your unwanted items for a little extra cash. There are many items that people do not use to their full capacity and are ready to be passed on in great condition, thus saving you money and saving space in the landfills. This will also encourage you to think twice about whether you really need that item, as often times while researching an item online you can find another option altogether.

Recycle

Reduce Reuse Recycle to boost your budgetThe other side to the ‘reuse’ coin is to Recycle: put an ordinary item to use in a different way than it was intended. For example, use old dryer-sheets for dusting, use paper bags for textbook covers, or use discarded printouts as notepaper or coloring paper for kids. Check out Helium for more great ideas, and keep an ear open for ideas of how your friends and collogues use everyday items in a new way.

These tips can become part of your and your family’s lives on a daily basis, regardless of economic climate. When you learn to live within your means and be happy doing so, the benefits will far outweigh any sacrifices.

Chick-fil-A First 100

Posted by Joshua on August 8, 2010 in Earn All You Can, Give All You Can, Save All You Can, Videos with View Comments

Until last week, I had only been to a Chick-fil-A once in my life. The service at that one dinner was so above and beyond that I wrote a letter of praise to the corporate offices.

That’s when I started to read the business philosophies of the President, Dan Cathy, and his father, Chick-Fil-A founder Truet Cathy. I then began reading the Cathys’ leadership theories and they blew me away. I had to meet these guys.

On July 29, 2010, Chick-fil-A opened a new location in Valencia, California. To celebrate the Grand Opening, they gave away a year’s worth of free lunches to the First 100 customers. I joined the crowd and sought out interviews with Event Planner Hollee Swain, Owner Operator Dustin LaChance, and Chick-fil-A President Dan Cathy.

Earn, Save, Give: John Wesley’s Guide to Success

Posted by Joshua on July 15, 2010 in Earn All You Can, Give All You Can, Save All You Can with View Comments

There are many ways to achieve success in life.  Some plans are more elaborate than others.  Some would work for everyone while others would only achieve one person’s definition of success.  Some are simple in design but take a lifetime to execute.  John Wesley, a founder of the Methodist Church, wrote many sermons centering around proper stewardship of money and his instructions for a path to success.  He stated that everyone can follow these three steps:

  • Earn all you can
  • Save all you can
  • Give all you can

Earn All You Can

John Wesley wrote that God has given each of us valuable skills and talents.  It is our duty to use these gifts to their fullest potential.  We must work as hard as we can to create success for ourselves and our businesses.  A balance must be struck between causing no harm to our fellow man while gaining the most resources for ourselves, our families, and our communities.

Save All You Can

John Wesley then wrote of the importance of living frugally.  We must not squander away these hard earned resources by trying to ‘keep up with the Joneses.’  Wesley himself lived a very humble life, never raising his budget throughout his entire career after seminary.  The goal is to only use as much of the gifts as is necessary to keep our families comfortable, healthy, and safe.

Give All You Can

After working hard and earning great success in our business, and living frugally, there will be plenty of resources (time, money, and so on) to give.  Wesley wrote that these resources are to be used to help our fellow man.  It is our duty to improve our world, and to leave it better than we found it.
