Success secrets from John Wesley quotes
While I don’t find myself in a church on a regular basis, I do see great value in learning from religious leaders. John Wesley’s writings are no exception. Wesley lived during Revolutionary War times in both England and America. He founded a very analytical and studious movement in Christianity called Methodism.
The Methodist approach to religion reminds me of many of today’s agnostics. The basic, watered down premise is to accept no dogma blindly, but instead for each person to study and interpret all writings for himself.
John Wesley Quotes
The danger in such a thoughtful approach to faith is similar to a flaw I have noticed in myself and many of my clients. Many of today’s entrepreneurs experience “paralysis by analysis.”
“Beware you be not swallowed up in books! An ounce of love is worth a pound of knowledge.” –John Wesley, 1768
John Wesley writes that while knowledge is important, it’s the love that really makes a difference in the world. Beware of sitting back and spending your whole life making “perfect decisions” and failing to take action. There is no such thing as a perfect plan. Get out into the world now and spread your love.
On the other hand, John Wesley wrote not to run your life with your head down:
“Though I am always in haste, I am never in a hurry.” –John Wesley, 1777
True leaders develop the ability to make informed, efficient judgments quickly. This is one of the keys to success. Surround yourself with wise advisers, trust their opinions, but never hurry through any decisions to the point that you forget to think for yourself.
John Wesley measured success differently than many others of his time (and many people of today as well). Wesley felt that success is measured not by the number of possessions that one can amass, but by the amount of positive that that he can implement.
“Having first, gained all you can, and secondly, saved all you can, then give all you can.” –John Wesley, Sermon 50
This is commonly paraphrased “Earn all you can. Save all you can. Give all you can.” In order to be a good steward of the resources we have been given, we must do our best to produce more than we consume. Then, with the bounty that we have leftover, we must help others. We must strive to turn our world to paradise on earth.

A few days ago Ryan brought up a great point about the value of education. It sparked an awesome discussion about those of us who go to a seminar and buy an educational product and then take it home and do nothing with it.
We are shelling out big bucks at the seminar and it just sits there in the – I love the term that someone said – the “shelf help” section of our book case.
So some people say that knowledge is power. But I like to think of it as only
Applied Knowledge is Power.
Let me tell you about a friend of mine. My friend J has a motto. Almost a mantra. J says, “Act at the speed of instruction.”
And J doesn’t just say it, he lives it.
I admire J very much. He is not only a great business man and real estate investor. But I also admire him as a kind, giving family man.
Now, I tagged J in this video, but I know he’s not going to respond right now because, at this very moment, he is accomplishing another page in his dream book.
Congratulations! Way to go, buddy!
Now a few years ago, J was in a tough spot, to put it mildly. To respect his privacy, I’m not going to get into the details, but let me just say that major health issues led to major financial issues. To the point that J was selling his personal positions on ebay just to put food on the table for his family.
Now J worked his butt off just to try to find the investment for a Real Estate Investor Education program.
By the way, this system that J uses is, in my opinion, THE Real Estate education that everyone needs. If you want the info, private message me and I’ll get it to you.
So the key that J implements that I personally am learning from him is: every time he learns something, he applies it immediately.
When he is told that a successful investor has many Real Estate agent contacts, he is on the phone calling up agents. When an instructor teaches him how to analyze a property for a short sale, he has a hundred spreadsheets filled out by the end of the day.
Now really awesome thing is, it works. In fact, it has worked so well for J. that in a few short years, he has grown his business, net worth, passive income, and accomplished so many pages in his dream book that he is going to need another book to start dreaming even bigger.
So that’s the key. That’s what I learn from J. Act at the speed of instruction.
Making an investment in yourself, an investment in your future is awesome. But for heaven’s sake, take it out of the shrink wrap. This is not a comic book action figure that keeps its value if it’s never opened.

Why does embarrassment cause stress?
Hey, Joshua Bevan here, learning how to earn all I can, save all I can, so I can give all I can.
Fear.
I read an article written by a group of evolutionary psychologists that really helped me put some of my fears into perspective.
We all know about the Fight or Flight response, right? It was developed over time to help me when I’m in physical danger. When the lion starts charging me, I’ve got to gear my body up to protect myself.
I’ve got to choose between pulling out my spear and killing the lion, or running as fast as I can and hoping to get away.
That makes sense…but here’s the really interesting part:
In the world I live in, I’m not presented with physical threats very often. My life is rarely in that kind of danger. Yet my body still gears up. I get that stress response.
My heart starts racing, pupils dilate, heavy breathing, digestion shuts down.
But all of this happens when I’m “just” about to talk to a new person or stand on stage in front of many people. There’s no physical danger here. The worst thing that can happen is that I can embarrass myself.
Embarrassment? So what? What does my tribal hunter/gathering ancestor care about embarrassment?
Ah-ha! But he does! You see back, then my survival is all based within the tribe. If I did something that was socially unacceptable, the rest of the tribe would punish me.
Watch. Say I was foolish enough to put on my best loincloth and seduce the chief’s woman. We sneak off and make passionate love on the bear skin rug.
Now when the chief walks into the wig-wam, he’s going to be pissed. He and all of his homeboys are going to beat me up and leave me in the jungle- all alone.
I’m all alone in the jungle. I’m not going to survive. My genes aren’t going to be passed on…
Now let’s take it a step further. What if the whole tribe is trying to figure out where to find the best hunting area.
I stand up in front of everyone and tell them my idea. But they all think my speech was lame and my idea sucks. They all laugh, and I’m embarrassed.
If I present embarrassing ideas over and over again, the tribe won’t accept me anymore. They will leave me alone to die.
To our ancestors, embarrassment equals death.
But do us, it doesn’t. That’s what we have to remember. In the embarrassing moment, I know it feels like you’re facing death.

Hi there, this is Joshua Bevan learning how to earn all I can save all I can so I can give all I can. Something came up yesterday with a HUGE life lesson in it, and I had to get out the camera and tell you the story today.
One of the parts that I love about owning my own business is that I write my own schedule and can make the time to give back to the world in the way I want. One thing I really enjoy is volunteering as a director at a summer camp. I started as a counselor and loved it so much that I now train young adults how to be awesome counselors as well; how to truly make a positive impact on the lives of the campers. So last night while we were at a fundraising event…

…So last night, we were at a fundraising event, and I was chatting with one of my best counselors. I’m not going to use her real name on here because I don’t want to embarrass her, but we’ll call her Nicole.
Nicole is a junior in high school. She is a wonderful writer. I’ve been lucky enough to read some of her short stories, and it blows me away, how good they are!
Now, Nicole also happens to be a good student. She works hard to earn good grades in all of her classes. This particular night, she was stressed out over an upcoming history test. She was having trouble memorizing all of the names and dates.
This got me thinking. Here’s a girl who has a great creative writing talent – and writing is something she LOVES. With the proper encouragement, I have no doubt that she will become one of the great writers of our time.
But our society is failing her.
Instead of nurturing and developing the talents that each individual excels with, our system is designed to encourage each individual to focus on being average, across the board.
I’m going to tell you what I told Nicole last night:
Stop being average!
You are allowed to be great!
I’m giving you permission right now to stop focusing on improving your weaknesses. If you’re particularly good at memorizing facts, that’s ok. If not, that’s ok too, because there are other people whose strengths lie in your areas of weakness. You will find them, and help each other succeed.
But for now, the best thing you can do is focus on your strengths. What are you good at? What do you LOVE to do?
And just like you now have permission to have weaknesses, I now also give you permission to love your strengths.
Put most of your focus into working on those strengths. Love doing it! Know that there is always room for improvement. You can always learn something from each new person that you meet.
That is how you become GREAT!

Unconditional Positivity
Everyone in this society has the same opportunity for success. Successful people win more because they seize more of these opportunities. When you keep a positive focus, more of these opportunities are apparent to you. When you see more, you can seize more.
How do I stay focused on the opportunities in front of me?
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: Broke people hang out with broke people. Successful people hang out with POSITIVE people. That’s one of the biggest keys, hands down.
How do I attract more positive people in my life?
Be a positive person! Like attracts like, so the more positive your attitude is, the easier it will be for you to connect with other positive people. Your attitude comes out in the way that you present yourself. People can tell when you’re faking a smile.
Life is hard. How do I make my whole body smile?
You know all about unconditional love: when you love someone no matter what. You can be really mad at her for something but you still love her. The same idea surrounds unconditional positivity. No matter what is happening around you, work on maintaining that positive focus. It’s not easy, especially when nothing seems to be going your way, but your attitude will help you climb out of that rut.
- Count your blessings. Think of all the things that are great in your life. Start with the fact that you are alive.
- Help someone else. Nothing else can uplift your spirits more than bringing joy to someone else. Find a way to volunteer your time to something that you are passionate about.
- Do an activity that you love. If it’s possible, stop whatever you are doing and take time to go surfing, or play guitar, or read a book. Whatever makes you smile, go do it.
- Talk to a mentor. It’s important to connect with mentors that have traveled the paths that you are on. Chances are, they have experienced the same speed bumps that you are hitting. They will have a good perspective of the other side to share with you.
- Reaffirm your goals. Take out your dream book or goal board or fantasy wall and bask in where you are headed. Know that you dreamed it up, so you have the power to make it happen. Before you put your book away, take action on the next step (even if it’s a baby step!) toward making one of those goals happen.

Successful People are Always Moving Forward
Look at any successful person that you know. Chances are, he is not sitting still. He is driving from one office to another, running from one lunch meeting to the next, checking in on one factory or the other. Even if he is only taking phone calls, he’s pacing the hallway the whole time. Successful people move. And most of them move quickly.
Now, from an outside perspective, this motion may seem random. It may look like he is all over the map. But highly successful individuals possess a rather sharp focus. While they may appear random, every move is highly calculated to bring him closer to his goals.
How Do I Obtain the Success I’m After?
“This is good news,” you say, “because I’m always fidgeting. That means I’m on my way to success!” Maybe. There are a few key steps to make sure that you get there.
- Know Where You Are Headed. In order to achieve anything, you must first know what it is. Sit down and plan out your goals on a regular basis.
- Take Action. Always stay light on your feet. Newton’s First Law applies to everything: if you are always in motion, it’s easier to stay in motion. Then, direct that motion towards your goals.
- Move Closer Every Day. Make it a point to move a little closer to your goal every day. Know what the next step is and take it. If you can’t take a full step, take half a step.
Focus on where you are going in order to be successful

Earn, Save, Give: John Wesley’s Guide to Success
There are many ways to achieve success in life. Some plans are more elaborate than others. Some would work for everyone while others would only achieve one person’s definition of success. Some are simple in design but take a lifetime to execute. John Wesley, a founder of the Methodist Church, wrote many sermons centering around proper stewardship of money and his instructions for a path to success. He stated that everyone can follow these three steps:
- Earn all you can
- Save all you can
- Give all you can
Earn All You Can
John Wesley wrote that God has given each of us valuable skills and talents. It is our duty to use these gifts to their fullest potential. We must work as hard as we can to create success for ourselves and our businesses. A balance must be struck between causing no harm to our fellow man while gaining the most resources for ourselves, our families, and our communities.
Save All You Can
John Wesley then wrote of the importance of living frugally. We must not squander away these hard earned resources by trying to ‘keep up with the Joneses.’ Wesley himself lived a very humble life, never raising his budget throughout his entire career after seminary. The goal is to only use as much of the gifts as is necessary to keep our families comfortable, healthy, and safe.
Give All You Can
After working hard and earning great success in our business, and living frugally, there will be plenty of resources (time, money, and so on) to give. Wesley wrote that these resources are to be used to help our fellow man. It is our duty to improve our world, and to leave it better than we found it.
